Identify the building’s fire risk, sleeping areas, construction, wiring condition, connected loads and the consequences of an unexpected trip. Then check the installation rules adopted for that location and the exact AFDD product arrangement. A device can add protection against hazardous arcing on a final circuit, but it does not replace sound wiring, overcurrent and residual-current protection, or a documented maintenance plan. Record the reason and boundary for each selected circuit.

Decide circuit by circuit where arc protection is useful

Residential AFDD planning should start with the final circuits, not the number of spare ways in the consumer unit. List the rooms and equipment served, the age and route of wiring, combustible construction, sleeping accommodation, occupant vulnerability and likely consequences of a fire or unexpected power loss. Record the local installation rules and client requirements. The IET AFDD guidance describes how fire-risk considerations can influence the decision, but its jurisdiction and edition must be checked for the actual project.

For each candidate circuit, note the load type and whether the wiring is hidden, accessible, frequently disturbed or exposed to mechanical damage. A final circuit serving outlets in sleeping accommodation may warrant a different discussion from a circuit serving an outdoor pump. Do not describe either as automatically mandatory everywhere. The goal is an explicit, reviewable reason for protecting a particular circuit.

Separate the building risk from the circuit boundary

A high-level building risk does not identify the affected circuit by itself. Draw the distribution board and trace each outgoing final circuit. If a circuit serves several rooms or has spurs, list them. Identify what remains energized when its AFDD opens and whether an unexpected disconnection could create a safety issue. The IET AFDD questions and answers emphasizes that an AFDD protects the downstream circuit it serves; a single device should not be described as whole-board protection unless the exact approved arrangement genuinely does so.

Where the installation has critical loads, explain the continuity requirement in the design. Arc protection may still be needed, but the circuit may require a different arrangement, alarm strategy or documented alternative under the adopted rules. Do not silently omit the AFDD or place it upstream of unrelated circuits to save space. The responsible designer should record the tradeoff and obtain approval.

Residential situation

Reason to review AFDD use

Evidence needed

Sleeping accommodation

Occupants may not notice an electrical fire early

Room and circuit map, adopted rule

Combustible construction

Fire spread consequences may be higher

Building details and risk assessment

Old or altered wiring

Connections and cable condition need closer review

Inspection results and repair plan

Mixed socket loads

Load switching and future appliances vary

Load list and maintenance guidance

Continuity-sensitive circuit

An unplanned trip may create another hazard

Continuity objective and approved design

These are qualitative review prompts. Local rules, current edition and actual risk decide the requirement.

Check the adopted rules and the product scope

Some jurisdictions use AFDD requirements for defined residential building or final-circuit types; others use recommendations or risk-based decisions. Editions also change. Record the country, authority, standard edition and circuit category on the schedule. The IEC 62606 publication defines the AFDD product category; it does not by itself tell every building owner where a device is required. Avoid copying a regulatory sentence from an older article into a new project without checking the current adopted text.

Once the need is established, select the exact AFDD model and combination. Check rated voltage and frequency, current, poles, neutral route, short-circuit capacity, associated MCB or RCBO function, line/load direction and test method. A product photo cannot prove those properties. The IEC 62606 evidence guide explains what to ask the supplier for.

Fit the protective device into the real consumer unit

Review the available DIN-rail width, busbar geometry, line and neutral connections, terminal capacity, enclosure clearances, heat conditions and access for testing. A retrofit can fail at the physical interface even when the AFDD rating appears suitable. A mixed-manufacturer board may need additional compatibility evidence. If a board replacement is required, include its scope in the procurement plan rather than promising a simple device swap.

The SUTON ETB9LAF-40 page and ETB9LAF-63 page provide real product references for comparing form factors. Select the offered code from the model-specific documentation. The family pages are not a substitute for checking the exact circuit breaker or residual-current functions required on each final circuit.

Consider how residents will use and report the device

Prepare a short circuit-specific handover note that a resident can use without removing any cover. Identify the affected rooms or outlets, where the declared front indication can be read, and whom to contact when a trip recurs. Keep this note consistent with the exact manufacturer’s reset instructions; do not invent a universal reset sequence. In a rented property, make the same record available to the owner and maintenance contractor so a change of occupant does not erase the protection history. Explain that unusual smells, damaged equipment or other unsafe conditions require competent investigation rather than repeated attempts to restore the supply.

Give the occupant a plain explanation of which circuit is protected, what a trip interrupts, what the visible indicator means, and when to call a qualified person. Do not tell residents to repeatedly reset a device after an unexplained trip. If there is heat, smoke, a burning smell or damaged equipment, the circuit should remain safely isolated for investigation. The HSE electrical-safety guidance supports competent work and safe isolation.

When one household uses many switched electronic loads, an event log helps distinguish a repeatable load pattern from an installation fault. The log should record the time, appliance, circuit and AFDD indication; it should not encourage residents to open the consumer unit or test live conductors. A contractor can use this evidence in the AFDD trip-diagnosis process.

Keep other protective functions visible

An AFDD addresses arc-fault signatures. Overload and short-circuit protection remain necessary; residual-current protection may also be required. A combined device can provide several functions, but its exact model must be checked. The AFDD versus RCBO guide shows the functional boundary. Do not assume the AFDD replaces a smoke alarm, correct cable selection, suitable enclosures, good termination practice or inspection of damaged wiring.

For a dwelling with a generator, inverter, battery or other alternate source, draw every source mode. Confirm whether an electronic protective device may be backfed and whether line/load markings remain valid. The board’s as-left drawing should show how isolation and neutral switching work in each mode. The question is especially important in retrofits where the original consumer unit was designed for one utility source.

Procure against a circuit schedule

Send the supplier a final-circuit list with voltage, frequency, load, conductor and neutral arrangement, fault level, consumer-unit make, busbar, protective functions and AFDD rationale. Ask for the exact model code, datasheet edition, installation diagram, declaration, compatible accessories and test-button procedure. If a model is offered as an alternative, have the designer compare its width, terminal map and protection functions with the approved base option.

Resolve any unknowns before shipment. A bid that lists “AFDD included” but omits the final circuits, quantity or model codes does not establish the intended protection. Keep approved substitutions and their reasons with the purchase record so the installer receives the same design that was evaluated.

Commission and hand over the residential installation

Before energization, verify device identity, circuit labels, conductor routing, neutral terminals, torque, barriers and protective-earth paths under the approved procedure. Use the manufacturer test button or self-test method and record the indication. If the product includes an RCBO, test that function under its separate approved method. Do not create a live arc to demonstrate the AFDD. The AFDD commissioning guide provides a record structure.

At handover, give the owner the final circuit schedule, AFDD model list, trip-indication legend, safe reset advice, maintenance interval source and contact route for repeated trips. Record the as-left drawing and test result. Reassess the AFDD plan after a new source, major load, circuit extension, consumer-unit change or change in building use. The circuit-breaker types guide places this device among the other protective functions in the home.

For an existing home, keep the inspection findings separate from the decision to add an AFDD. A new protective device cannot repair a damaged cable, overheated socket, loose neutral or unsuitable enclosure. Document those repairs and repeat the affected installation tests before treating the board upgrade as complete. If a circuit cannot be traced confidently, make that uncertainty visible in the scope and resolve it before relying on a new AFDD position. This record also helps explain to the owner why some circuits were upgraded and others were not.

Product-reference illustration based on the actual SUTON product photograph; use the exact model documentation for ratings, installation and test requirements.

Product-reference illustration based on the actual SUTON product photograph; use the exact model documentation for ratings, installation and test requirements.

Educational video

This independent demonstration supports the AFDD principles discussed here.
