The parent circuit-breaker guide gives broad context, while rcbo line load orientation and rccb neutral wiring errors cover related decisions.

Prepare before energization

Compare the device code, ratings, pole arrangement, line/load markings, residual-current type, sensitivity, curve and breaking capacity with the schedule. Confirm cable size, neutral route, protective earth, busbar position, barriers, enclosure and accessory wiring. Resolve discrepancies before applying power. Follow the approved safe-isolation procedure and use competent personnel.

Run the functional checks

Operate the manufacturer test button and record the result, but do not treat it as proof of every protective function. Use the approved instrument and method for residual-current testing, noting test current, phase angle or waveform, trip time, device state and operating mode. Verify overcurrent or short-circuit evidence through the approved procedure, not by creating an uncontrolled fault.

Close the handover record

Record instrument identity, calibration status, test method, measured values, date, responsible person, drawing revision and as-left settings. Label the circuit and retain the report with the model-specific manual. Repeat affected tests after a source, cable, setting, firmware or accessory change.

Commissioning must follow the exact product instructions and approved test method.

Keep the three protection functions separate

An RCBO combines residual-current protection and overcurrent protection in one device, but those functions answer different questions. Residual-current sensing looks for an imbalance between current-carrying conductors; the overcurrent element responds to overload or short-circuit conditions. Rated current, trip curve, residual-current sensitivity, type, breaking capacity and pole arrangement must all match the circuit. A device can be correct for one function and unsuitable for another.

Start with the system voltage and frequency, phase and neutral arrangement, earthing system, conductor size, prospective fault current, load type, required disconnection time and operating modes. Draw normal, standby, transfer, generator, bypass and maintenance conditions. Retain the exact catalog code and manufacturer diagram in the approval record.

Use the product evidence and project study

Ask the supplier for the complete model code, rated current, trip curve, residual-current type and sensitivity, pole function, short-circuit capacity, terminal diagram, test-button circuit, accessories, ambient limits and coordination information. A generic family brochure is not enough where several options share the same housing. Record the document revision and any conditions on a compliance schedule.

IEC 61009-1:2024 gives general requirements and tests for RCBOs within its stated scope. HSE electrical-safety guidance reinforces competent work and safe isolation. Apply the edition and local rules adopted by the project; neither source approves a specific SUTON combination.

Commission and document the installed device

Before energization, verify identity, line/load terminals, neutral routing, conductor placement, torque, barriers, labels, settings, test-button operation and isolation boundaries. Record the instrument, test method, operating mode, result and drawing revision. A test button exercises a defined internal path; it does not replace inspection, insulation checks, fault verification or safe isolation.

Repeat the review after a load, cable, source, setting, firmware, enclosure, busbar or accessory change. If a test fails, preserve the as-found state where safe and change one variable at a time. Mark missing evidence as conditional and obtain engineering approval rather than substituting a similar-looking device.

Procurement questions that prevent rework

What exact code and option package is offered?

Which conductors are sensed and which poles open?

What rated current, trip curve and residual-current type apply?

What short-circuit capacity and coordination tables cover the installation?

Is reverse feed allowed, and what are the line/load markings?

What commissioning method and instrument limits are required?

Which ambient, busbar and accessory restrictions apply?

Which drawing and datasheet revisions belong in the handover file?

Keep the final model code, settings, test result, protection study, wiring diagram and approval together. A clear limitation is safer than a blank field that later appears to be an approval.

Review the whole circuit before selection

List each outgoing circuit, conductor size and length, connected load, expected inrush, ambient condition and maximum fault current. Identify whether the circuit is single phase or three phase, whether the neutral is distributed, and whether the panel uses a busbar, comb connection or flexible link. These physical details affect terminal capacity, heat dissipation and isolation as well as the electrical protection functions.

For a new panel, compare the RCBO schedule with the schematic, panel layout and cable schedule line by line. For a replacement, save a before snapshot of the device, model code, terminal positions, settings and date. A change that appears small—such as moving a feed to another busbar position or adding an auxiliary contact—can alter the neutral route, isolation boundary or available fault duty. Record the reason for the change and the person who approved it.

Use controlled tests and change one variable at a time

Define the acceptance test before energization: visual inspection, conductor identification, connection check, protective-conductor continuity, insulation or leakage check where applicable, residual-current test, overcurrent evidence where specified, and verification of labels and barriers. State which values come from the manual, which come from the protection study and which come from the adopted installation rules. A test result without its method and instrument range is difficult to audit.

When a test fails, preserve the as-found state where safe and investigate one variable at a time. Do not change the device type, setting, wiring and load simultaneously. Check whether the quoted code is installed, whether the neutral follows the intended sensor, whether line and load terminals match the drawing, and whether the source is in the expected mode. If a corrective action changes a drawing or setting, issue a revision and repeat the affected tests.

Keep maintenance information usable

At handover, give the owner the final model code, rating, curve or characteristic, residual-current type and sensitivity, breaking capacity, pole arrangement, terminal diagram, accessory list, test result, drawing revision and maintenance limitations. Label the device and circuit so a future technician can identify the isolation point without guessing. Where the device is part of a selective or backup arrangement, keep the coordination table with the panel record.

Reassess the selection after a transformer, generator, inverter, charger, motor drive, cable route, firmware, enclosure, busbar or source change. Also reassess after a repeated trip, unexplained test failure or a change in the local rules. A new device with a similar front label may have different sensing, switching, electronic supply or short-circuit behavior. Treat the replacement as a new technical decision until the evidence shows otherwise.

Supplier questions that close common gaps

What exact model code and option package is offered?

Which conductors are sensed and which poles open?

What rated current, curve, residual-current type and sensitivity apply?

What short-circuit capacity and coordination tables cover the installation?

Is reverse feed allowed, and what are the line/load markings?

What commissioning method and instrument limits are required?

Which ambient, busbar and accessory restrictions apply?

Which drawing and datasheet revisions belong in the handover file?

Keep the acceptance record readable for procurement, commissioning and maintenance teams. If a value is conditional on a source, cable, enclosure or accessory, write that condition beside the value. A clear limitation is safer than a blank field that later appears to be approval.

Keep the approved record with the panel documents so future inspections can confirm the same assumptions, terminals, settings and test boundaries.

Use the SUTON residual-current product page as a quotation starting point and request model-specific documentation.
